A Guide to Shipping Cremated Remains Following Cremation Services
Are you and your family planning on shipping a loved one’s cremated remains once their upcoming cremation services are complete? Use this guide to help you do it successfully.

Step 1: Place Your Loved One’s Remains Into a Soft-Proof Container.
The last thing that you want to happen when you’re shipping a loved one’s cremated remains is for them to spill out all over the place. It’s why you should stick their remains into a sift-proof container. In most cases, a Mission, TX cremation urn should do the trick. But you can also find less expensive options if you know that you’re not going to need a cremation urn over the long run (for example, if you’re shipping the remains so that they can be scattered somewhere). There are some affordable sift-proof cremation containers that will work just fine.
Step 2: Put The Sift-Proof Container Into a Durable Shipping Box And Surround It With Plenty Of Cushioning.
Once you have your loved one’s remains in a sift-proof container, you should put them into a durable shipping box that is also designed to keep the remains safe. You should throw a bunch of cushioning material into the box along with the inner container so that it doesn’t move around too much while it’s en route to its final destination. And if you think of it, you should also write your contact information down on a piece of paper and place it into the box along with your loved one’s remains. This might really come in handy if the shipping label that is put on the box is damaged or lost.
Step 3: Bring Your Loved One’s Packaged Remains To Your Local Post Office.
One very important thing to remember is that you can’t just ship cremated remains through whichever shipping company you want. Some companies like UPS and FedEx have banned people from shipping remains through their services. You will instead have to bring your loved one’s packaged remains to your local post office. The U.S. Postal Service does allow people to ship remains as long as they do it in the right way. You’ll need to do everything that we’ve already discussed when shipping remains through the USPS and put a cremated remains label called a Label 139 on the outside of your shipping box.
Step 4: Make Sure You Send Your Loved One’s Cremated Remains To The Right Address.
Some people spend so much time worrying about how they’re going to package up their loved one’s cremated remains to ship them that they write down the wrong shipping address for them. This is obviously a mistake that you want to avoid at all costs. You should double and even triple check to be sure that you’re shipping your loved one’s remains to the right destination.
