SAN ANTONIO — Heriberto (Eddie) Aguirre, 90, passed away to the Lord on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at his residence in San Antonio after a lengthy illness. He is preceded in death by the love of his life, Ofelia Garza Aguirre, his wife of 65 years; brothers, Gilberto Aguirre and Luis Majin Aguirre; sister Angelica (“Hela”) Aguirre Cantu; and his parents Luz and Josefa Aguirre.
“Eddie” is survived by his two children, Gilberto Aguirre, MD and wife Cynthia of San Antonio, Imelda Aguirre Lee and husband Richard also of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Jaime Aguirre of San Antonio, Maritza Aguirre Wong and husband Daryl of Manvel, Javier Aguirre, MD of Austin, Rachel Lee and Ryan Lee of San Antonio; and two great grandchildren, Eric Wong and Amanda Wong of Manvel.
Eddie was born on April 6, 1925 in San Jose, Mexico but lived all his life in Texas. He was 5 years old when his mother passed away so in the fourth grade he dropped out of school and started working in the farm fields of the Rio Grande Valley to help his dad, brothers and sister to make ends meet. At age fourteen, fudging on his license application, he obtained a commercial driver’s license and along with his older brother Gilberto started trucking produce from the Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio and other parts of Texas. In 1955 he settled in Angleton, Texas after hauling rice in the area. On July 18th 1955 was naturalized a U.S. citizen and was extremely proud of being an American. In 1958 he was offered a job by the city of Angleton as a walking water meter reader. He worked his way up the ranks after obtaining his GED, then Certification and License for water and sewer management and eventually becoming Director of Water Utilities for the City of Angleton. He served in that capacity for many years until his retirement in February 1992. He was always very appreciative of all of the opportunities that were afforded him in Angleton as well as all the longtime friendships that he developed there. He also never forgot all the wonderful relationships that he had developed in the Rio Grande Valley during his youth and early adult years. His constant emphasis to his son and daughter played the greatest part of their success in life as he wanted them to have what he never had, a formal education. His constant love and giving of himself to others was an inspiration to all.
