Luis Antonio Alamia Jr., 76, patriarch of the Alamia family, known as "Coach Alamia" or "Mr. Alamia" went home to our Lord on November 1, 2018.
Mr. Alamia was born and lived in Edinburg and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mr. Alamia was a leader within the Edinburg community placing the needs of others ahead of his own. His devotion and love to his family and his community will always be remembered. Mr. Alamia graduated from Edinburg High School and attended New Mexico Highlands College and Pan American College. He went on to play semi-pro ball for a number of years and was inducted to the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. He was known to many for playing baseball where he earned the title of the "Prince of Thieves" after having set a national NAIA record for stolen bases at New Mexico Highlands in the 1960s. Mr. Alamia was a coach at Edinburg High School and then went off to coach youth sports where many know him as the coach for the "Blue Angels." Mr. Alamia served as an Assistant Principal at Edinburg High School and Edinburg North High School. After 48 years in education, Mr. Alamia finally retired in 2013 from Edinburg North High School. While at Edinburg North, Mr. Alamia was known to all the students as the principal that handed out "mints."
He is preceded in death by his parents, Luis Sr. and Adelina P. Alamia; and his sister, Maria De La Paz Guerra.
Luis is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marcy (Montelongo) Alamia; two children, Luis Alamia, Amy (Edgar) Anzaldua; three grandchildren, Tristan Antonio Anzaldua, Abram Ricardo Anzaldua, and Serenity Lou Alamia; four siblings, Sylvia (L. Aron) Pena, Richard (Yolanda) Alamia, Rudy (Paula) Alamia, Linda Alamia; a brother-in-law, Joe Guerra; numerous nieces and nephews; and his walking partner Leila, his miniature schnauzer.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 5, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Having the honor of serving as Pallbearers will be Luis Gabriel Alamia, Edgar Anzaldua, Louis Dominic Pena, Joseph Derek Conde, Leonard Montelongo Jr., Regino Lopez III, Fernando Gabriel Castillo II, and Carlos Javier Cantu Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard Alamia, Rudy Alamia, Rene Vela, Alonso Perez Sr., Leonard Montelongo Sr., and Cesar Montelongo.
We would like to thank all those who took part in making dad's last few days as comfortable as possible: Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Emergency team, Medical ICU team, Palliative team, and all the wonderful staff at Amara Hospice in Edinburg. We especially would like to thank Elda "Marta" Meraz for the wonderful care given to our dad.
**All ECISD Employees (former or current) are encouraged to wear their school colors to honor Mr. Alamia and the legacy he leaves in his hometown, Edinburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Capital Campaign Fund.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
