ALVILDA I. ALCALA
Pharr - Alvilda I. Alcala, 95, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, October 1, 2016, in San Juan, Texas, after a nine year battle with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
She was born December 22, 1920 in San Benito, TX to Juan Alcala and Guadalupe Longoria Alcala. A lifelong Valley resident, Alvilda graduated from Harlingen High School in 1939, and worked for Edelstein’s Better Furniture for over 40 years up until the time of her retirement in 1985. In her younger and more active years, she enjoyed cooking and baking, music, and watching old-time musicals. Alvilda was a woman of strength and character who possessed a sweet and gentle spirit. She will be greatly missed.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Ruth Balaguer of Pharr; and her cousins, Henry Snodgrass of Edinburg, Margot Longoria Mendez of Corpus Christi, and Samuel Longoria Jr. of Robstown and their respective families.
A special thank you to the staff and caregivers at San Juan Nursing Home for their wonderful care of Alvilda who was a resident there for the past five years, and for their kindness and support during this time of bereavement. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2016, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at St. Francis Chapel located in San Juan Nursing Home. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
