EDINBURG - Marin Lorenzo Alvarado Sr., 90, entered eternal rest Sunday, February 14, 2021, at his residence in Edinburg. He was born on September 5, 1930.
Marin Lorenzo was a lifelong resident of Edinburg and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elida C. Alvarado; his parents, Marin and Micaela Alvarado; two brothers, Mike Alvarado, Doroteo Alvarado, and two sisters, Enedina Johnson and Micaela Cardenas.
The Alvarado and Cavazos families witnessed the great love between Marin and his wife, Elida. Together, they raised a family and built a legacy of devotion that spans generations. With deep devotion, Marin cared for Elida as her memory faded over the years from Alzheimer's. Four years after her passing, Marin did not want to spend another Valentine's day apart.
Mr. Alvarado's strength, humor, and character are traits held by each of his six children who survive him: Jaime Javier (Carla) Alvarado of Spring, Sonia A. (James) Finley of McAllen, Marin Lorenzo (Santa) Alvarado Jr., Norma (Lucas) Hinojosa, Gustavo Gabriel (Trudi) Alvarado, all of Edinburg, Sandra (Albert) Rodriguez of Houston; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five sisters in law, Juanita Alvarado of Edinburg, Lupita (Alonzo) Vega of San Carlos, Juanita Garza, Irma Cavazos both of Edinburg, and Linda Cavazos of Colorado.
Marin Lorenzo was a combat veteran of the Korean War and served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 as a forward observer. For his service, he earned a Silver Star and achieved the rank of Corporal. Mr. Alvarado fought behind enemy lines and earned the respect of his battalion and high-ranking officers. After his service, he opened his mechanic shop in Edinburg and serviced eighteen-wheelers, tandem trucks, and all types of vehicles in the surrounding area. His children could hear the roar of hotrod engines from the home garage on the weekends and his sons learned mechanical skills they carry with them today. Marin later taught general mechanical repair with ECISD for 28 years, impacting thousands of students' lives with practical skills and fatherly guidance.
Mr. Alvarado's life showed resilience, honor, strength, and the ability to bring levity to any situation. Marin loved his family, the ocean, and cars; he rode the current wherever it led. On February 14, 2021, it led him back into the arms of his wife, Elida, and his Lord Jesus Christ.
The Alvarado family is grateful for everyone that contributed to Marin's care in his final days, including the dedicated staff at South Texas Health System - Edinburg and Walgreens pharmacist Larry Ruiz. We cannot express the depth of our gratitude for the love, compassion, and companionship shown to our dear father by his caretakers Lupita and Rhoy Villa and their beautiful daughters Ximena and Natalya.
Marin's eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Lucas Hinojosa, Jr., Marin L. Alvarado III, Michael Alvarado, Dr. Daniel Hinojosa, James Alvarado, Ste-phen Rodriquez, Kevin Rodriguez and Gabriel Alvarado along with honorary pallbearer, Rhoy Villa.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary Friday, February 19, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg. Graveside service will take place at 12 noon Saturday, February 20, 2021, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
