Anita R. Chavez passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the age of 80 in McAllen, TX.
She was the widow of Rogelio Chavez with whom she shared 56 years of marriage. Born August 19, 1943 in Rio Grande City, TX, Anita was a compassionate individual who dedicated her life to caring for her loved ones. She had tremendous faith in God and was always available to support and pray with friends and family. Known for her attentive listening skills, she was always available to talk, especially if a little gossip was involved. Anita also enjoyed baking, with her Mexican Wedding Cookies being a cherished family favorite. Music was a constant presence in her home. She could often be found singing along to the tunes of Linda Ronstadt, Freddy Fender, and Vicente Fernandez, often infusing her performances with a spirited "grito."
Anita is preceded in death by her husband, Rogelio Chavez; parents, Jose and Anita T. Robles; four siblings, Estella Teran, Virginia Perez, Rosendo Robles, and Jose Robles Jr.
Mrs. Chavez is survived by her three children, Judith (Carl) Flowers, Suzette Chavez, Mark (Cate) Chavez; eight grandchildren, Carl Flowers II, Anita M. Chavez, Talicia Flowers, Jasmine Chavez, Haley Chavez, Kaitlyn Chavez, Kassidy Chavez, Kendra Chavez; a great-grandchild, Ryan Saenz; two sisters, Carmen (Don) Kitchen, Janie (Joe) De la Garza; and former daughter-in-law, Deyanira Chavez.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. prayer service Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 8:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2024, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Anita to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
