SAN JUAN – Jesus Armando “Chuy” Canales, 86, died Thursday, October 27, 2016, at his residence in San Juan.
Chuy was born in Premont, Texas to Ezequiel Cisneros Canales and Delfina Gonzalez. He served state side in the United States Army during the Korean War and then went on to graduate from Pan American College. Mr. Canales was employed by the Texas Employment Commission for 30 years and retired as manager of the McAllen office in 1985. Jesus served his parish community of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish by donating much of his time and talents including working the Jamaicas and barbecuing to help raise funds for various charity projects. He was also instrumental in establishing the Stations of the Cross at the Basilica of the Virgen de San Juan. He served on the South Texas ISD school board as well as the Hidalgo County Appraisal District Review Board. Chuy was an original member of the Tripa Club in McAllen and also a member of the Lion’s Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Knights of Columbus, and the Red Brangus Association. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, farmer and rancher.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Cantu Canales; a daughter, Vanessa L. Canales; his parents, Ezequiel and Delfina Canales; and four siblings, Belia Cruz, Aurora Garza, Hesiquio Canales and Lilia Perez.
Mr. Canales is survived by four sons, Armando B. Canales of St. Petersburg, FL, Dr. Edmundo C. (Anna) Canales of Mission, Duane R. (Alicia) Canales of Plano, TX, Joel Aaron Canales of San Juan; a daughter, Carla G. Canales of San Juan; three grandchildren, Eric C. Canales, Kevin B. Canales, Christina D. Canales; a sister, Ester C. Tobin of Brownsville; and a brother, Dr. Carlos Canales of Corpus Christi, TX.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, October 30, 2016, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2016, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Pallbearers will be Eric, Kevin and Christina Canales, Mike Martinez, Roy Carranza and Nestor Garza III. Honorary pallbearers are Mario Cantu, AL “Sonny” Martinez, Ruben Yzaguirre, Julio Guzman, Hector Recio and Rudy Garcia. Interment of cremated remains will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. Military honors will be conducted by Sgt. Benito Alaniz VFW Post #7473 of Elsa.
