Magda Arredondo

November 23, 1934 — April 4, 2015

On April 4th, 2015, a beautiful Holy Saturday, just before dawn, Magdalena Arredondo was called home. Her last moments were spent surrounded by her family and filled with love. Magdalena was born on November 23, 1934 to Ignacio and Maria Dolores Sanchez in the small town of Vallecillo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Growing up in Laredo, Texas she was an active member of many organizations and often served in leadership positions including Pan American Student Forum Historian, Senior Class Historian and Library Service Club Sweet Heart. She graduated from Martin High school in 1953. Building upon her lifelong love of dance and her dance education at the Altagracia Azios School of Dance, she opened her own dance studio. In 1961 she married her high school sweetheart, Manuel Alfredo Arredondo. They went on to have three children, Marissa Aimee Rodriguez who lives in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Miguel Angel (Crystal) Arredondo who lives in Carrollton, Texas and Rebekah Raye (Cody) Gandy who lives in New York, New York. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children. She was especially proud that all three of her children earned post graduate degrees. In addition to dance, she had an affinity for numbers. While she attended college, her field of study was in accounting. She went on to use her education the rest of her life holding positions in office management for several businesses. As a mother she was actively involved in supporting the interests and creativity of her children. She served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and Cookie Chairman and as President of the Edinburg High School Sergeanette Dance Team Booster Club for her daughter Marissa. She served as Cub Scout Leader, Little League Mom and Edinburg High School Band Booster for her son Miguel. During Miguel’s senior year in high school, she and Manuel served as host parents to Sandra Eberle of Turbenthal, Switzerland. Finally, she served as Robert E. Lee Elementary sweetheart float organizer and sewing teacher and mentor for her youngest daughter Rebekah. Magdalena was well known around the neighborhood and prized for her creativeness in decorating her yard for the holidays. After a long career in office management, Magdalena retired and was able to devote more time to her family and friends. She spent many volunteer hours at Las Palmas Community Center. She leaves her husband of 53 years, Manuel Alfredo Arredondo; three children, Marissa, Miguel and Rebekah; five grandchildren, Gilbert Jr., Miguel, Michaela, Marco and Arabella; and one great grandchild, Nicholas to cherish her memory . Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg on Tuesday, April 7th, 2015 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 pm.
