ALONZO "LONZIE" BARRERA

EDINBURG - Alonzo "Lonzie" Barrera was granted his angel wings on December 29, 2009. His final days were spent at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center surrounded by family and friends.

Although Lonzie only reached the age of 24 and his life may have seemed too short, his loving soul and cheerful spirit will live on endlessly in the hearts of his loved ones. Lonzie's family and countless number of friends who were touched by his outgoing and vivacious personality understand that the quality of his existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which he lived.

Throughout his difficult fight against Leukemia, Lonzie remained unfailingly strong and courageous. He gave those around him a new understanding of the word strength and a new appreciation for the precious gift of life. The love and devotion of his grandmother, Mary Barrera, who never left his side since February 20th, 2009 brought him comfort throughout his journey. There are no words to express the amount of gratitude she deserves for the sacrifices she made to care for Lonzie during his time of need; her seflessness is an inspiration. Lonzie and his grandmother will always remain a pair.

"The day I learn to fly I am never coming down" is a motto he lived by. Even though his family will miss him dearly, they are consoled knowing he is flying in heaven making all the angels laugh.

Lonzie is survived by his father Benito A. Barrera; his paternal grandparents, Alonzo and Mary Barrera; his mother, Debbie T. Miller; his maternal grandparents, Victor and Emma Berrones; his sisters, Yvette Molina (Greg Molina) and Jeanette Guzman (Javier Guzman, Jr.); his two nieces, NIna Gloria Guzman and Yalainna Rose Molina; and his nephew Alonzo Javier Guzman.

The services were held at Holy Spirit Catholic Parish on Saturday, January 2, 2010. The pallbearers were: Greg Molina, Tommy R. Pheanis, Julian Avila, Charlie Ramirez, David Cadena and J.T. Garza.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting monetary contributions to be sent to Wells Fargo account number 8123752928. The donations will be used to fulfill one of the many dreams he had of giving back to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, a hospital that gave him so much.

Funerall services were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
