MARIA ELENA "MENA", "MISS B." BARRERA McALLEN — Maria Elena "Mena", "Miss B." Barrera, 68, died Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg. Maria Elena was born on November 11, 1946 in Boulder, Colorado to Maria Ninfa and Eduardo Barrera. She graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1965, received her B.S. from Pan American College in 1968 with a degree in History and Spanish and she subsequently earned her M.S. in Administration. She taught for 3 years at Rio Grande City C.I.S.D., 14 years at Roma I.S.D., 24 years at McAllen I.S.D. She is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Eduardo & Mrs. Maria Ninfa Barrera. Maria Elena is survived by her brothers, Eduardo Ubil (Shelly) Barrera of Eagan, Minnesota and David Barrera of McAllen, TX; uncles and aunts: Alberto (Celia) Barrera, Angelica (Harry) Brown of Rio Grande City, Silvia (Leobardo) Buen Día of El Paso, TX, Alfredo (Eva) Cardenas of Laredo, TX, Nelly Martinez of Eagle Pass, TX; and numerous cousins across the nation. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, May 4, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
