Dr. Pearl Brazier
EDINBURG—Pearl W. Brazier, 71, passed away on January 16th at Comfort House in McAllen. Dr. Brazier was born in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on August 12, 1944, and was preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Grace Martin. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Gerald Brazier of Edinburg, her two children, Michael Brazier of Redmond, WA, and Jennifer Turner (Jonathan) of Winston-Salem, NC, and two grandchildren, Avery and Grant Turner also of Winston-Salem. In addition, she is survived by eleven of her thirteen siblings and 43 nieces and nephews.
Dr. Brazier grew up on a small family farm in Pennsylvania, went to a one-room schoolhouse until the fifth grade, became the valedictorian of her high school class, the first of her family to graduate from college, earned three graduate degrees, including a PhD in Computer Science, and became the founding chairperson of the then-UTPA’s Department of Computer Science. She nurtured the university’s computer science program from a faculty of two in 1981 to one that currently has a faculty of over twenty. Aside from her family, the students of the university were her life’s passion. She has impacted the lives of thousands of students in her 34 years at the university and she will be missed.
Outside of her academic career, she was a loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother, a doggedly competitive tennis player, and a committed member of her various church communities over the years. She stood firm against the challenges of life and, in the words of that old spiritual, she was like a tree planted by the water, saying “I shall not be moved.”
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
