GUADALUPE S. CANTU
The love that Mr. Cantu has given to all those around him cannot be measured - only treasured.
EDINBURG - Guadalupe S. Canu, 89, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Freddy Gonzalez Veterans Home in McAllen.
Born in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 1922 to Prudencio and Josefa Cantu, Mr. Cantu was raised in a humble life setting where he was taught to be an honest man and to always maintain high moral standards.
Having served in the US Marine Corps. in 1943-44, Mr. Cantu is indeed proud of having provided his share in the development of the freedom that we all have in our fine country, The United States of America. He was the second resident admitted to the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in July of 2006. He always shared, telling everyone how much he enjoyed living there because of the genuine care that the staff, especially Michael Stevens (RN), provided for him and other residents.
On April 1, 1945, Mr. Cantu married the love of his life, Beatrice Ruiz, and together they raised four very fine daughters.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice R. Cantu; a daughter, Jesusita Cantu; and two brothers, Domingo Cantu and Luis Cantu.
Mr. Cantu is survived by his daughters, Yolanda C. (Robert Jr.) Garza, Rebecca C. (Tony) Diaz, Elida C. (Roberto V.) Garcia, Elma C. (Hector) Dominguez, all of Edinburg; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, who all knew him as "Popo"; two sisters, Raquel Sanchez, of San Antonio, Texas, Eva Del Toro, of Del Valle, Texas; and two brothers, Manuel Cantu, of Spring Branch, Texas and Tomas Cantu, of San Antonio, Texas.
A rosary was held Monday, October 10, 2011, at Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today, October 11, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. Pallbearers will be Ricardo Garza, Javier Garza, William Barrera, Jorge A. Botello, Dr. David I. Longoria and Miguel Dominguez. Honorary pallbearers will be Alejandro Alvarez Sr., Alvin Hernandez, Esteban Montemayor, Geronimo Dominguez Jr., Michael Stevens and Oscar Viera. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 101 of Pharr.
It means a lot to have such a fine father like Mr. Cantu. He was a gentleman who will always be admired and appreciated by everyone whose life he has touched.
