JOSE CANTU PHARR - Jose Cantu, 61, died Wednesday, April 29, 2015, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Born in San Juan, he had lived there most of his life and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Dolores Cantu; and a sister, Maria Guadalupe Cantu. Jose is survived by two daughters, Monique (Eric Castrejon) Cantu, of San Juan, Christina Cantu, of Killeen; a grandson, Christopher Villarreal, of Killeen; his former spouse, Gracie Cantu, of Pharr; and five siblings, Rosa Alma (Jose) De Valle, Pablo (Celerina) Cantu, both of Nampa, Idaho, Juan Cantu, Ramon (Paula) Cantu, both of Pharr, and Norma (Reynaldo) Olvera, of Alamo. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Sunday, May 3, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Pallbearers will be Pablo Cantu, Ramon Cantu, Oscar Martinez, Eric Castrejon, Jason Pecina, and Juan Jose Gomez. Military honors will be conducted by Sgt. Benito Alaniz VFW Post 7473 of Elsa. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
