MARIA ESTELA CANTU “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” EDINBURG — Maria Estela Cantu, 95, passed away, Saturday, March 1, 2014. She was born in Edinburg and had lived there all of her life. Mrs. Cantu is preceded in death by her husband, Alejandro Cantu; two sons, Rodolfo and Baby Cantu; Parents, Luis and Guadalupe Trejo and seven siblings. Maria is survived by her five children, Irene (George) Raulston, of Palmview, Gilberto (Mary B.) Cantu of McAllen, Elena Cantu, Carlos Cantu and Maria Alicia Cantu, all of Edinburg; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Although not formally educated, she was clever, ingenious, resourceful, and loved arts and crafts. She was a stellar cook, seamstress, and an avid gardener. She was also a product of her time. Had she been born at a different time, she might have been an engineer or had a successful business career. To us she was mom, grandma, great grandma, tia, cousin, friend, and the Atlanta Braves’ #1 fan. Words cannot express how much we will miss her. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, March 3, 2014, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
