PV1 ARTUR0 "ARTIE" CANTU, III EDINBURG - Private Arturo Cantu III, 23, entered peacefully into eternal rest to be with our Lord on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. Artie graduated from Johnny G. Economedes High School in 2010. That same year he enlisted in the United States Army and in March 2011 he entered active military duty. Private Cantu was awarded the prestigious Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) and the Army Commendation Medal (ARCOM) for courageous action in Afghanistan. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Dolores Cantu; maternal grandfathers, Antonio Saldana and Francisco Saldana; and an aunt, Donna Villegas. Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Irma (Thomas) Saldana; his father, Arturo (Delia) Cantu Jr.; two sisters, Ingedia (Arturo Ramirez II) Cantu and Mikaela Saldana; two nieces, Amris and Hailey Ramirez; a nephew, Austin Ramirez; maternal grandmothers, Otila Saldana and Julia Saldana; paternal grandfather, Arturo Cantu Sr.; as well as many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 6 p.m. prayer service today, October 27, 2013, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2013, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
