MARIA DEL CARMEN CAPISTRAN BARRERA
EDINBURG – Maria Del Carmen Capistran Barrera, 91, passed away peacefully at her home Saturday, June 18, 2016.
Born and raised in Mission she was a proud 1944 graduate of Mission High School. Mrs. Barrera was a natural athlete and excelled playing softball into her 50’s. She was a devoted catholic and was a member of the Hijas De Maria for 20 years until she married at the age of 39. She resided in Edinburg since 1965. She cherished Sunday afternoons during football season and watched her favorite the Dallas Cowboys. Her zest for life showed in everything she did especially when visiting with friends from the neighborhood. Mrs. Barrera was a notary for many years and helped countless people attain the American Dream of becoming U.S. citizens.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Bonifacio Barrera; her parents, Guadalupe and Francisco Capistran; two brothers, Macedonio and Jose Capistran.
Mrs. Barrera is survived by four children, Antonio G. (Denise) Barrera, Jose Rogelio Barrera -Capistran, Francisco (Marissa) Barrera, all of Edinburg, Dora Linda (Fidel) Garcia of Rio Grande City; 11 grandchildren, Antonio G. Barrera, Marcus Bo Barrera, Gabriella Barrera, A.J. Pena, Bryan Pena, Amanda Pena, Marc Moralez, Alyssa Moralez, Fidel Garcia, Jr., Jesse Garcia, Eric Lee Garcia; five great-grandchildren, Landon Pena, Makaylah Flores, Olivia Flores, Mariah Garcia and Kassidy Garcia; and nieces and nephews, Frances Capistran Deparini, Macedonio Capistran and Maria Luisa Capistran Olivarez.
The family sincerely thanks Mrs. Diana Garcia for the loving care she gave their mother.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at San Jose Cemetery in Mission.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
