Roberto "Beto" Othon Cardenas, 81, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2022, at his residence in Edinburg. He was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico on July 2, 1941.
Don Beto loved fishing, hunting, and cooking for his family. His field of dreams included the Beach "y el monte". Although he was a certified Public Account all his life, he was also considered a formidable healer or "curandero" by his family and friends. And although he had no education in the medical field, he had an herbal remedy to offer for any ailment. Don Beto's favorite hobbies were movies and music. He was an avid sports fan with a passion for the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, and of course World soccer, football and boxing. He was a great chess player and taught many others this game.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Zoila Idalia Gutierrez de Cardenas; parents, Ladislao Cardenas Martinez and Adelaida Guerra de Cardenas; five siblings, Procopio Cardenas Guerra, Jose Maria Cardenas Guerra, Bertha Cardenas De La Garza, Ladislao Cardenas Guerra; Maria del Socorro Cardenas de Sanchez.
Don Beto is survived by his two children, Ladislao (Araceli De Los Santos) Cardenas, Zoila Idalia (Mike Bates) Cardenas; five grandchildren; and three siblings, Evangelina Cardenas de Garcia, Adelaida Cardenas de Ramirez, Maria Guadalupe Cardenas.
Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary Friday, August 12, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg.
