HAZEL HARRELL CARSON
EDINBURG- Born March 14, 1933, in Lanier County, Georgia, Hazel Carson graduated from Norman Park High School in 1950. She married Robert Lewis that same year, and they welcomed a daughter Dianne in 1951. In the spring of 1956, they moved to Houston, Texas for better job opportunities and welcomed their son Byron Jay in 1960. For many years, she worked as a bookkeeper. She married Morton Carson in the fall of 1980, and they lived in Kingwood, Texas before building their dream house in Edinburg, Texas, and moving there in 1998. She left this earth on July 24, 2021. Hazel won a beauty contest when she was 16. As a young wife and mother, she could make impressive pies and cakes for any occasion and could sew beautiful clothes for herself and others. In later life, she took great joy in her dogs, first her beloved Buffy, then Chrissy and Carly. Hazel is survived by her husband Morty and her children Dianne (John) Hopkins of Houston and Byron Jay (Keely) Lewis of Edinburg, TX, her step-children Dr. Milinda (Dr. Noel) Carson Meltzer of Boston and Charles (Melissa) Carson of Houston. She is also survived by her sisters Freeda (Curtis) Powell, Geneva Sloan, and Eugenia Spires. Her grandchildren include Jason (Aline) Hopkins, John Michael (Marti) Hopkins, Andrew (Jaycie) Hopkins, Elizabeth Lewis, Mark (Jordan) Lewis, Reuben (Thy) Meltzer, Bernard (Elise Deloy) Meltzer, Elan (Maya) Meltzer, Uri Meltzer, Lisa (Dwight) Astin and Megan Carson. Her great-grandchildren include Cole Hopkins, Keely Hopkins, Caleb Hopkins, Audrey Hopkins, Helena Hopkins, Penelope Hopkins, Aubrie Astin, Beatrice Meltzer, and Ezra Meltzer. Violet Robertson, born June 25, is her first great-great-grandchild. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents Ivy and Mary Roland Harrell and her siblings Edith Baker, Clara Paramore and Charles Harrell. The family is very appreciative of all the love and care Lucilla Jimenez provided Hazel during the last years of her life. Lucilla was a helpmate and dear friend through good times and bad. Byron Jay and Keely request donations in her memory to Palm Valley Animal Society at PVASTX.org. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton Rd. in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
