ROBERT FRANKLIN CELL
Robert Cell passed away at home September 19, 2009. He was born in Kansas
City, Kansas in 1921, and reared in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating from
high school in 1938. He spent three and ½ years in World War II, including
service with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in England.
In 1947 he married LaVone Craig, and they moved to Manhattan, Kansas where
he attended Kansas State University, earning a Master of Science degree in
mathematical and applied statistics with a graduate minor in physics. In
1950 he joined the General Electric Company at the Hanford Works in
Washington state, applying statistical methods to the production of
plutonium. In 1953 he joined the Bendix Corporation in Kansas City,
Missouri, as a staff engineer, then quality control manager, then
operations research manager.
In 1978 he retired early from Bendix, and joined the faculty of the University of Texas - Pan American, teaching statistics, production management and allied courses. He retired from there in 1987.
He was a Life Master, Certified Director, and Certified Teacher in the American Contract Bridge League, and active in local bridge circles. He and his wife were cruise bridge directors, traveling all over the world teaching and conducting bridge games on cruise ships. They visited 105 countries from 1989 to 2002.
In his career, he was a Fellow in the American Society for Quality
Control, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member of MENSA, a national director of the National Management Association, a member of the Advisory Council of the Department of Industrial Engineering of Kansas State University. He wrote and published several books on statistics, genealogy and family history.
He leaves his wife, two children - Richard H. Cell of Austin, Texas, and Jennifer Cell Sada of Prairie Village, Kansas, their spouses, and four
grandsons.
Graveside services will be held in Kansas City, Missouri at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
