GUSTAVO G. ELIZONDO, SR.
SAN JUAN - Gustavo G. Elizondo Sr., 82, went to be with our Lord Sunday, October 15, 2017, at McAllen Medical Center.
Gustavo was born in Los Ramones, Nuevo Leon, and lived in San Juan for most of his life. He was devout to his Catholic faith and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish, where he served as an usher and was an ACTS brother. He was an employee at Sears, Roebuck and Company, for 36 years. He enjoyed regular visits to Sears with his wife for many years following his retirement in 1998.
Gustavo was a proud supporter of PSJA High School Bears athletics, he especially enjoyed attending every home game to cheer on both the football and baseball teams. Mr. Elizondo was also the number one fan to both of his granddaughters who were members of the PSJA Varsity Bearettes. Mr. Elizondo truly embodied the saying “Once a Bear, Always a Bear.” Just days before his passing he was able to make it out to watch The Mighty Bears defeat the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars, a game that both his son and grandson were officiating. He had passion for his favorite sports, he looked forward to the weekends so that he could cheer on the Texas A&M University Aggies and Dallas Cowboys.
Family always came first to Gustavo; he always made sure his close ones were always well taken care. Most notable he would lend a hand with repairing appliances and making it out to weekend fishing trips. Gustavo was a humble and loving man and his unforgettable smile with forever remain engraved in his family’s hearts.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Guadalupe Elizondo and Ramiro Elizondo; and a sister, Tomasa Alvarado.
Mr. Elizondo is survived by his wife of 60 years, Orfelina H. Elizondo of San Juan; a son, Gus (Gracie C.) Elizondo Jr. of Pharr; and was grandpa of Adrian (Mindy) Elizondo of Edinburg, Audrey Miranda Elizondo of College Station, Alyssa Alexis Elizondo of Pharr. He is also survived by a brother, Baldemar (Irene) Elizondo; a sister in law, Fela Elizondo, both of McAllen; and four brothers in law, Rodolfo Alvarado of San Juan, Homero (Egla) Hernandez of McAllen, Jose Orlando († Raquel) Hernandez, and Oscar († Cruzita) Hernandez, both of San Juan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 12 noon Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
