Elvira de la Garza

Elvira Guerra de la Garza, 94, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Avalon Memory Care in Edinburg, TX. She was born in Mission, Texas on April 6, 1930, to Pedro and Librada Guerra.
Elvira was a big advocate of a good education for all her children and grandchildren. She was an elementary school teacher, elementary school counselor, and a high school migrant counselor for Edinburg CISD. She was also a supervisor with the adult education program.
She had great love and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Ct. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel #1993.
Elvira is preceded in death by her husband Jesse de la Garza; daughter Dr. Norma Alonzo; her parents, Pedro and Librada Guerra; siblings Porfirio Guerra (Buda), Adela G. Saenz (San Antonio), Cipriano Guerra (Mission), Peter F. Guerra (Erie, PA), Eva Castro (Austin), Ismael Guerra (Paterno, CA), Adan Guerra (Mission), Estella G. Salinas (Mission), and Jose Alfredo "Chacho" Guerra (Turlock, CA).
Elvira is survived by her four children, Dr. Andrew (Dr. Donna Joule) de la Garza, Peter (Alma) de la Garza, Helen (Tommy) Santiago, John de la Garza, and son-in-law Roland Alonzo; seven grandchildren: Nicholas (Elizabeth Mayne) de la Garza of Austin, TX, Dominic de la Garza of San Antonio, TX, Matthew (Kaylee) Alonzo of Clarksville, TN, Phillip Alonzo of Edinburg, TX, Nathan (Ashley) Santiago of Edinburg, TX, Gina de la Garza and Carly de la Garza of Houston, TX; two great grandchildren, Anna Alonzo, and Lucy Alonzo; and a sister, Lydia (+Rigoberto) Rodriguez of Mission, TX.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary Monday, March 10, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
