Our sister Marta was called home on June 11, 2021, at 12:18 p.m. She endured a short illness which she valiantly fought but was unable to beat.
Marta was the fourth child of Romeo S. and Elsa Belia Escobar who preceded her in death. She is survived by her siblings, Belia Elizabeth (Sam) Escobar-Thompson, Ruben R. Escobar, Elsa E. (Jesse) Rodriguez, Sylvia I. Escobar; a nephew, Dr. Nicholas E. Rodriguez; and a niece Emilia E. Rodriguez.
Marta graduated from PSJA High School in 1984. She played percussion for the PSJA Mighty Bear Band. Life then took her in many directions after that. She got her cosmetology license through UCAS and attended Pan American University to pursue a degree in Theatre. She was an excellent cook and loved preparing meals for the family. Nobody could top her enchiladas or homemade pizza. Her most important ingredient was always...love. She was also highly creative and could sew some of the most elaborate costumes. She often took 1st place in costume contests during Halloween.
Marta was a free spirit. She lived life just the way she wanted. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and her wit was unmatched. She had an uncanny appeal for the macabre and loved musicals. Spooky movies and scary shows were her favorites. She easily knew lines and details after one viewing. One of her other much-loved hobbies was fishing. No matter how often we went out to Padre Island, she always caught the first fish and the largest one.
Her family was her number one joy and part of that family included furry ones, particularly cats. From her first when she was 4, Panchito, the Siamese who learned how to ring our front doorbell to her latest Frodo, who would sing to her at night. She had a soft spot for strays and loved them all the same.
There will never be anyone or anything that can replace the pain in our hearts due to the loss of our beautiful sister. We want to thank the staff of Rio Grande Regional ICU unit. A special thanks to Dr. Luis Arango, whose care for our sister went above and beyond and her attending nurses who took care of her with tenderness and decency.
We would also like to thank the directors of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan, Texas. Special thanks to Ms. Velma Sue DeLeon for her guidance.
