SSG ROBERT GAONA SAN JUAN – SSG Robert Gaona, 43, died Saturday, August 8, 2015 in Corpus Christi. Born in McAllen, he had lived in San Juan most of his life. Staff Sergeant Robert Gaona was an active member of the U.S. Army for 23 years. He loved fishing, camping, working on his yard, plants and spending quality time with his kids. Staff Sergeant Gaona is preceded in death by his father, Jose Gaona; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn Gaona and Raiden Joe Gaona. He is survived by his wife, Elvia Gaona of San Juan; three sons, Robert Joe (+ Jeanette) Gaona, Tristan Lee Gaona, Nickolas Jude Gaona, all of San Juan; his mother, Maria Francisca Gaona of Pharr; and two sisters, Deanna Morin of McAllen and JoAnn Salinas of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 13, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted by Texas Army National Guard. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of San Juan.
