Irene "Nena" Garcia

April 20, 1936 — December 7, 2009

IRENE “NENA” GARCIA

“There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven…..a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.” Ecc. 3:1 & 4.

EDINBURG – Irene “Nena” Garcia, April 20, 1936 in La Grulla, Texas was a day of rejoicing for Miguel and Teresa de Jesus Solis Espericueta when they welcomed the birth of their 8th child, Irene, a daughter, who they named after her grandmother, Irene Vecchio.

December 7, 2009, in McAllen, Texas was a day of sorrow and goodbye for her family and friends as Irene fulfilled the days the Lord had numbered for her here on this earth.

Irene’s passing completed almost 52 years of marriage to Juan “Johnny” Garcia; fulfilled her role as mother to three daughters, Susana, Anita (who preceded her in death in February, 2004) and Velma; and grandmother to five grandchildren and great-grandmother to two great-grandchildren, all to whom she was “Mama Nena.”

Irene survived her brother, Ramiro Espericueta and her sisters, Antonia Lopez and Elida Villarreal but left behind her sister, Miguelina Garcia of Sebastian, Texas and brothers, Jose Rogelio “Roy” Espericueta and Reynaldo Espericueta both of Edinburg, and Rene Espericueta of Santa Barbara, California. Affectionately known as “Tia Nena”, she leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces, several whom have been especially close to her these last few years and whose love, generosity and kindness is beyond measure. Also attentive to her throughout the years is her sole surviving aunt from La Grulla, Texas, Santa Rita (“Tia Sara”) Solis Gomez. Many thanks to Tia Sara for her love and care.

Irene is also survived by Dora G. Espericueta whom she came to love as a daughter. Thank you to Dora for loving Irene like a mother.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service today, December 9, 2009, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in San Carlos. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Valley Athletic Trainers Association for the Anita Garcia Memoriam Scholarship Fund, a scholarship established by the Garcia Family and awarded each year to a Valley student in memory of their daughter and sister, Anita.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8
