OFELIA GARCIA
EDINBURG- She is survived by four siblings, two daughters, many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She spent her youth as a migrant worker and was a lifelong advocate for immigrant, undocumented and worker rights. She was a first generation college graduate with a masters in bilingual education from the University of Texas Pan American. Most of her career was spent teaching at Rayburn Elementary in McAllen, TX. In her retirement, she substituted at De La Vina Elementary in Edinburg, TX, where she discovered her love for neurodivergent education. She spoke her native Spanish so beautifully that it was poetry. She was a wonderful writer and loved to read. She loved the NBA, was a talented bowler and excelled at hula-hooping. She loved literature, cumbias, plants, her home, her dog Tess and her family. She relished in sweets, a walk to the mailbox and a morning cup of coffee. We will miss her deeply.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Sunday, February 6, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 8 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
