JUAN L. GARZA
PHARR – Juan L. Garza, 96, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Village Healthcare and Rehabilitation in McAllen.
Juan Garza Leal came from a small rural village, Los Herreras, in the state of Nuevo Leon in Mexico, about 150 miles south of Edinburg, Texas. He worked at local slaughterhouses, “Bryan and English Meat Packing Company” and Arturo Vale Meat Market for years. He became a great butcher and was proud of being a lifelong member of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. Juan Garza was movie star handsome and was often compared to a Mexican movie star named Pedro Infante. He met an Edinburg girl named Eloisa Dimas who was part Italian, part Mexican and very beautiful; they married on January 19, 1945 and were married for 67 years.
He enjoyed watching boxing and UFC fights with his son, Alejandro (Hondo), and walked every day of his life, rain or shine, until he was 94 years old. Juanito was a smart dresser and prided himself in always being well groomed and he expected the same of his family. No one was allowed to leave the house without makeup or sloppily dressed. His love for his family was evidenced by the dedication of all five of his children who visited him daily during his stay at The Village.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro Garza and Margarita Leal; his wife, Eloisa Dimas Garza; and his seven siblings.
Mr. Garza is survived by his five children: Ofelia (Miguel) de los Santos, Oralia (Cruz) Cantu, Lilia Garza, Alejandro Garza and Sylvia (Ruben) Mancha; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to acknowledge the care and attention given to Juan Garza in the past few months by The Village nursing facility staff, in particular Ms. Laura Perez and Lydia Juarez, and attending doctors Juan Asuaje and John Orfanos, for their dedication and support during his last few months. Also the family thanks long-time friend Jose Valdez for his regular visits that uplifted Juanito’s spirit.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Friday, December 18, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral mass will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
