Julio De La Garza Sr.

August 22, 1915 — February 25, 2012

JULIO (Don Julio) DE LA GARZA, SR.

EDINBURG - Julio De La Garza, Sr., 96, died Saturday, February 25, 2012, at McAllen Medical Center.

Julio De La Garza was born on August 22, 1915 in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He moved to Edinburg with his family at the age of 7 and lived in the community for the rest of his life. Julio enlisted in the United States Army in his youth and served his newly found country proudly in World War II.

Julio was an incredible and dedicated participant in the community of Edinburg. He owned and operated De La Garza Slaughter House and Meat Market for 75 years. He had an outstanding work ethic. His customers could always count on receiving the best of service and product at the Slaughter House. They were always greeted by him as he sat on his bench and proudly worked side by side with his son Julio Jr. and grandson, Julio III up until the last days of his life. Visiting the Slaughter House was more than a grocery shopping run, it was an enjoyable social event.

Julio was an avid Edinburg Bobcat fan. He demonstrated his enthusiasm by holding season tickets for decades. I believe those of us who knew him best can picture him sitting on his bench with his Bobcat cap and recall some of the post game conversations week after week and year after year. But most of all, Julio valued his family. When he was able to take time off from his business, he always visited his daughters and grandchildren all over the country. The loving memories with them were unforgettable.

Julio is preceded in death by a daughter, Elvia Davis, his parents, Jesus and Casimira De La Garza; four brothers; Guadalupe De la Garza, Alfredo De la Garza, Agapito De la Garza and Segundo De la Garza and three sisters Tomacita Garza, Manuela Cantu, and Santos Tecla Hinojosa.

Julio is survived by four children, Rosalie (Henry) Braddock of Sawyer, MI., Emily Reynolds of Bedford, TX., Julio A. De La Garza, Jr. of Edinburg, TX., Sophia Millet of Fort Worth, TX.; 12 grandchildren, Ramona Braddock, Jennifer Braddock, Henry Braddock IV, Portia Haber, Kerry Davis, Misty Davis, Tina (Aaron) Simmons, Monica (David) Martinez, Melissa De La Garza, Julio (Ashley) De La Garza, Nichole (Joel) Jackson, Barron Millet II; 11 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Shelby, Alexis, Gabriela, Samantha, Hannah, David, Ryan, Aidan, Julia, Nicolas; one brother, Jessie (Elvira) De La Garza of Edinburg; three sisters, Macaria Gorena of Edinburg, Evangelina Guerra of San Manuel, TX., and Isabel (Efrain) Flores.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., with a Celebration of Life at 7 p.m. today, Monday, February 27, 2012, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at El Buen Pastor United Methodist Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 8788 of McAllen.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
