Roel "Roy" Balli Garza, 80, died Monday, March 8, 2021, at his residence in San Juan.
Born in Alamo, he lived in San Juan for 30 years, and was formerly of California.
He served in United States Navy and Navy Reserve, retiring after 24 years of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Seferino Garza and Manuelita Balli; and two brothers, Daniel Balli Garza and Jesus Rodriguez.
Mr. Garza is survived by his wife, Rosario "Chayo" V. Garza of San Juan; two sons, Randall Roel Garza and Rick Garza, both of California; three step-children, Lizza Marie (Colin) Harrison of Volente, TX, Lori Ann Garza of Pharr, John Robert (Kristyn) Garza of Frisco, TX; a goddaughter, Victoria Garza of Alamo; four siblings, Reynaldo Balli (Odilia) Garza of Mission, Oscar Balli (Margarita) Garza of Pharr, Lucila (Romeo) Escobar of McAllen, Raul Balli (Sylvia) Garza of Alamo; a sister-in-law, Frances Garza of San Antonio; three grandsons; two step-grandchildren, Ava Renee Garza and Zachary Rodriguez.
Roy was a proud Navy Veteran during the Vietnam era. He served two years as an aviation ordnanceman (AO) at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis on the attack aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Randolph, and notably served when the U.S.S. Randolph was the recovery ship for two of NASA's Project Mercury missions, including John Glenn's historic first orbital flight. Once retired, Roy returned to the Valley to be close to his family and for the last 29 years was married to the love and dance partner of his life, Rosario "Chayo" V. Garza, who he often referred to as his "Princesa".
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Celebration of Life, March 11, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2021, at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW 8788 of McAllen.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
