ALAMO - MSGT Jose Gomez (USAF Retired), 68, resident of Alamo, TX, formerly of Austin, TX, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2011.
Jose enlisted in the Air Force in 1964. He was a 25 year veteran who served during the Vietnam War, with tours of duty in Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and South Korea, and was also stationed in various cities throughout the United States. It was during his travels to Korea that he met and married Sok Sun; together they had a son and a daughter. While in the military he received the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Devices, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon with six Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with five Oak Leaf Clusters, NCO PME Graduate Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and proudly proclaimed his pride on the tailgate of his pickup truck.
Jose was passionate about his work as an airplane mechanic and he loved muscle cars. His favorite vehicle was his 1969 Camaro SS. To this day, the Camaro still has the original 350 motor and an eight track cassette player. “PaPa” as he is known by his twin granddaughters always made time to visit even when his health was failing.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Justo and Victoria Gomez; brother Erasmo Gomez; nephew Jesus Gomez, Jr.; niece Isabel Martinez and sister-in-law Gloria Gomez.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter, Jeannie Henry and husband Roy, of Round Rock, Texas; Jason Gomez and his wife Susan, of Los Altos, California; granddaughters Rylie, Kaylie and Addison Henry; grandsons Julian and Mason Gomez; brothers, Jesus Gomez, Gabriel (Guadalupe)Gomez, both of San Antonio, Texas, Juana (Joe) Jasso, Maria Alicia (Pedro Jr.) Martinez, Frances (Rubio) Gomez, all of San Juan, Flora Vela, Justo (Gloria) Gomez Jr., Telesforo (Ana) Gomez, all of Pharr, Gloria (Cristoval) Martinez, of Alamo; his former spouse, Sok Sun Chon, of Austin, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The family will receive guests for visitation from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, today, October 23, 2011, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Monday, October 24, 2011, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
