JOE M. "CHEMA" GONZALES ALAMO - Joe M. "Chema" Gonzales, 97, died Monday, January 14, 2013, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. Chema was born in Santa Cruz, Texas on August 14, 1915 and had lived in Alamo since 1932. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Pauline Berryhill; a great-grandson, Trevor Lozano; two brothers, Oscar and Eloy; and a brother-in-law, Chano Garza. Mr. Gonzales is survived by six children, Rose Marie Marshall, Joe Ernest Gonzales, Ricky Gonzales, Sharon Garcia, John Edward Gonzales and Brenda Franco; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hilda Garza. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, January 16, 2013, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Interment will follow at Donna City Cemetery. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
