EDUARDO “ED” GONZALEZ
EDINBURG – Eduardo “Ed” Gonzalez, 84, entered eternal rest Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Edinburg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Edcouch, Ed had lived in Edinburg for 40 years and was formerly of Elsa. He served in the United States Army during the Berlin Crisis and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mr. Gonzalez was employed by Edinburg CISD as a principal at Austin Elementary, Sam Houston Elementary, and Escandon Elementary, and worked as an educational consultant at Region I Service Center. Mr. Gonzalez also served on the Edinburg Housing Authority, South Texas ISD Board of Directors, and was Superintendent of La Villa ISD. Ed was a life-long supporter of Edinburg High School sports. During his career in education, he influenced so many to pursue a higher education to further their careers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro and Irene Balli; his stepmother, Bertha Rivera Gonzalez; two brothers, Alex and Oscar Gonzalez; and a sister, Lydia Salzillo.
Ed is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carmen M. Gonzalez; three children, David John (D’Ett) Gonzalez, Daniel James Gonzalez, all of Edinburg, Laura Ann (Brad) Fleming of Coppell, TX; six grandchildren, Alex, Victoria, Nicole, Ashley, Maria, and Anthony; two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Aaliyah; and numerous relatives in Edcouch, Elsa, Zapata, Corpus Christi, Denton, and California.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elsa. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7473 of Elsa.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
