ANTONIO A. GUERRA McALLEN - Dr. Antonio A. Guerra, 81, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 7, 2013, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Guerra was a long standing resident of Brownsville and most recently McAllen. He is preceded in death by his wife, Olga Guerra; and daughter, Olguita Guerra. Dr. Guerra is survived by his children, Mark A. Guerra, of Austin, Texas, Dr. Julio (Ricki) C. Guerra of Randolph, New Jersey, Pilar (Tony) Tijerina, of McAllen, Texas; four grandchildren, Austin T. Guerra, Kimberly P. Tijerina, Kelsey L. Guerra, Steven A. Tijerina; and a sister, Teresa Peña of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Dr. Antonio A. Guerra was a highly recognized research scientist at USDA in Brownsville and Weslaco, Texas. His unending dedication as an Entomologist and valuable scientific discoveries and publications, were recognized all over the world. During his career, Dr. Guerra was also a traveling professor and academician at many national and international prestigious universities. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Technologico de Monterrey and his Masters and Doctorate degree at Virginia Tech where he graduated number one in his class. Dr. Guerra was a dedicated father and will be missed by his family, friends and students. He was a veteran of the Korean War. A rescuer of dogs and cats. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary, today, January 9, 2013, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 8788 in McAllen. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
