Maria De Jesus (Garcia) Hernandez was born in Jalisco, Mexico on February 26, 1934. She immigrated to the United States where she later met and married her husband Salvador Hernandez. They settled down in Mercedes, TX to raise their family and is where she would remain the rest of her years.
Maria was a homemaker and a devoted mother who spent her time tending to her husband, household and children. She had "the patience of a saint" and will always be remembered for her loving nature and her quiet strength. She was a lifetime caretaker and a selfless woman who would sacrifice her needs for the good of her family.
Maria was a devout Catholic and attended San Martin de Porres Church, she had a special place in her heart for the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints. Her strength and character were best shown through her diagnosis and battle with cancer and later her diagnosis with Alzheimer's. She loved and lived every moment she was given and no amount of struggle could rob her of her faith or joy.
Maria was called home on Tuesday September 16, 2021 at the age of 87, from her residence, surrounded by her loved ones. She will be remembered and immensely missed by her family and all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clemente and Paula (Romo) Garcia; her husband, Salvador Hernandez; siblings, Martin Garcia, Ramon Garcia, Maximino Garcia, Pedro Garcia and Guadalupe Garza, three children, Ninfa Gonzalez, Jose De Jesus Hernandez, Margarita Hernandez; a grandson, Joel Gonzalez; and a great-grandson, Aydan Oranday.
Left to cherish her memory are 10 children, San Juanita (Jose) Trevino, Alicia (Ramiro) Garza, Francisco (Leticia) Hernandez, Guadalupe (Stephen) Brewer, Maria De Jesus Hernandez, Salvador (Gricelda) Hernandez, Juana Maria (Rene) Cavazos, Silvia Hernandez, Martin (Nora) Hernandez, Antonio (Tila) Hernandez; son-in-law, Roberto Gonzalez; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 1 great- great-grandchild.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary today, September 21, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday September 22, 2021, at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.
