SISTER MARIA INES TREJO HERNANDEZ ALAMO — Sister Maria Ines Trejo Hernandez, 92, died Monday, June 24, 2014, at Amara Hospice Inpatient Facility in Edinburg. Sister Maria shared her life as a missionary to service God. Many of her contributions to the Lord included providing moral support to unwed mothers, under the direction of the Dioceses of Los Angeles, CA. After nine years, she was sent to Mission San Jose under Franciscan Priests in San Antonio, TX where she did home visits and catechesis. She worked with Spanish speaking adults and provided them with crotchet, knitting, and sewing classes to enable them to become self-sufficient. Sister Maria was very involved in the Barrio Better Development Corporation for the senior citizens program and also attended meetings of interest to the pastoral work. She continued missionary work at Saint Stephen’s Parish, west side of the city where she visited the residents at San Juan Home’s housing projects, and continued the same work at Guadalupe Parish under the Jesuits Priest. 10 years later, she was assigned to San Francis Xavier Parish in La Feria. She revitalized the Spanish culture by organizing processions on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which included mañanitas at 6 a.m. and posadas nightly in different areas of the Parish. After many years, she moved to Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo where she continued ministry as a volunteer, organizing Spanish Bible study in the rural areas of the city. Sister Maria also visited the sick at their homes and at the hospital to help bring communion as their spiritual strength. Her personal objectives were to work with people in different situations that included, the poor, sick, and unchurched. Sister Maria’s talents lay in these areas, as she understood the needs of the people, their fears, economic and moral situation. Her work will not be forgotten. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, June 26, 2014, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alamo.
