GERTRUDE KOTZUR LYSSY
EDINBURG - Gertrude Kotzur Lyssy passed away on Sunday, June 5th, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born on August 31, 1925, in the Polish farming community of Kosciusko, Texas to Nick and Adela Kotzur. Her parents were direct descendants of the Polish immigrants who came in 1854 with Father Leopold Moczygemba and settled Panna Maria, Texas; the oldest Polish Settlement in the United States. She was the second of five children. In 1926, the family left Kosciusko and migrated to the Polish settlement of McCook, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. Gertrude met and fell in love with Leonard L. Lyssy and they were married on January 19, 1946. Their marriage lasted almost fifty-six years until Leonard’s passing on December 13, 2001. They raised ten children Leonard M, Daniel (Nawona), Kathleen (John Bievenour), Michael (Diana), Ronald (Victoria), Darlene (Phillip Wendling), Nicholas, Lorene, James (Christie), and Wayne (Charlotte). Gertrude retired after 27 years as manager from the Edinburg High School Cafeteria. She was a life member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and loyal member of the St. Theresa Guild Altar Society.
She is survived by her nine remaining children, twenty-two grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and her sisters Barbara Kotara and Theresa Jarzombek. Gertrude is preceded in death by husband Leonard, son Leonard M., her parents, and brothers Elias and Benedict.
Pallbearers are grandsons Matthew Lyssy, John Bievenour II, Michael Lyssy, Ronald Lyssy, Jr., Ryan Wendling, Travis Gee, Micah Lyssy, and Daniel Lyssy. Honorary pallbearers are the remaining grandsons.
Viewing is from 6 to 8 p.m. today, June 8, 2016, and the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on June 8, 2016, at Memorial Funeral Home located at 208 E. Canton Rd., Edinburg, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on, June 9, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church located at 114 West Fay Street, Edinburg, Texas with burial to follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in McCook, Texas.
