DR. JESÚS “CHUY” LUNA EDINBURG, TX - Dr. Jesús “Chuy” Luna passed away Monday, January 5, 2015. He was 70 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustavo Luna and Antonia Rodriguez Luna; and one sister Gloria Luna Rodriguez. He was Professor Emeritus of History at California State University, Fresno where he taught for over 30 years. He was born in Falfurrias, Texas, and was the seventh child of eleven siblings in a migrant farm working family. Dr. Luna graduated from Edinburg High School in 1963, where he was captain of the football team. He also played baseball, lettering all four years as a Bobcat. Jesús was the first child of his family to graduate from High school and continued on a baseball scholarship at Pan American College from 1963-1967. He went on to pursue graduate education where he completed his Master’s degree in History at East Texas State University in 1969 and his Ph.D. from North Texas State in 1973 where he was a Woodrow Wilson Scholar. He is survived by his loving wife, Yolanda Diaz Luna of Edinburg, who he married in 1968. He has two sons, Carlos Gustavo (Amanda) of Ankeny, IA, and Hernan Alarcon of San Francisco, CA; a granddaughter Olivia Sigrid; his siblings, Gumaro (Isabel) Luna, Gonzalo (Esperanza) Luna, Zulema (Anselmo) Garcia, America (Adan) Garcia, Lucia (Gilberto) Garcia, Maria (Santos) Ramirez, all of Edinburg, Ricardo (Teresa) Luna of San Antonio, Texas, Oscar (Sylvia) Luna of Houston, Texas, Romeo Luna of San Marcos, Texas. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Friday, January 9, 2015, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
