M. Roel Peña, a lifelong resident of the Rio Grande Valley and a steadfast advocate for Texas public education, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on April 3, 2025, at the age of 79. A beloved husband, father, friend, educator, administrator, and mentor, Roel dedicated his life to his faith, his family, and his mission to uplift students and educators across Texas.

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Roel graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School, where his experiences as a student ignited his passion for education. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Physical Education from Pan American University and later pursued a master’s from North Texas State University, along with certifications in Educational Administration and Superintendency.

Roel’s teaching career began at his alma mater, where he taught high school biology and physical science. Driven by a deep commitment to supporting students facing economic and educational challenges, he continued his journey in Frisco ISD while earning his master’s degree.

Returning home with his wife, Roel expanded his impact in Edinburg ISD, serving as a counselor, assistant principal, and principal. He later joined McAllen ISD, where he led the development of the secondary curriculum, setting new standards for excellence. In 1994, he was appointed superintendent of San Perlita ISD, where he transformed the district from low-performing to exemplary in just three years—a milestone he held close to his heart.

Roel’s distinguished career culminated at the Region 1 Education Service Center, where he served as Deputy Executive Director, collaborating with superintendents and school districts across the region. Even after retirement, his passion for education never waned. As a member service representative for the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), he continued to mentor and advocate for school leaders across Regions 1, 2, 19, and 20.

Beyond his career, Roel found great joy in nature. He inspired his family and students to marvel at even the smallest creatures and to care for them with respect. Through countless family adventures—hiking, fishing, and exploring state and national parks—he nurtured a deep love for the outdoors, leaving those around him with a lasting appreciation for the natural world. In his late 40s, he developed a passion for classic car restoration, with a particular focus on 1960s and early 1970s Ford Mustangs. His meticulous craftsmanship earned him numerous first-place awards at classic car shows, a testament to his dedication and keen eye for detail. He always enjoyed the camaraderie of the Mustang Club.

Roel's life was centered around the love of his wife of 55 years, Gloria; his three children, Christopher (Ana), Iliana (Shawn), and Stephen (Monica); his grandchildren; and a beloved circle of extended family and dear friends. He also shared an extraordinary bond with his identical twin brother, Rolando, a connection he deeply cherished throughout his life. Roel will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and the genuine joy he brought to those around him. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, always offering a friendly greeting and a warm smile to both friends and strangers alike.

Roel and his family give thanks to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg, Father Rene and the countless parishioners who prayed for him through his short journey with brain cancer. Thanks also to family and friends who, with such love, gave of themselves to support them during this difficult time.

Roel’s legacy lives on in his family and the countless students, educators, and colleagues whose lives he touched. His unwavering commitment to education, his love for family, his faith, and his generous spirit will be remembered always.

In place of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the TSTC Foundation https://www.tstc.edu/give/ to support local students or to The National Parks Foundation https://give.nationalparks.org/ to help preserve our national parks.
