Maribell G. Cardenas

McAllen- Maribell G. Cardenas, 57, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023, at her residence in McAllen.

Maribell spent her whole life dedicated to helping others. She spent six years as a foster parent where she fostered around thirty children during that time. After her foster parent duties came to an end, she spent the next twenty years working for the State of Texas as a case manager under Texas Department of Health and Human Services-Community Care Eligibility Commission, helping local elderly and disabled applicants gain the goods and services they needed. She opened her heart to everyone by spending some thanksgivings feeding the local homeless. She also helped organize local events to extend medical insurance for those less fortunate. She was an avid dog lover as well, and rescued many dogs throughout her life.

She was a leader, and a strong woman with a kind and giving heart. Above all, she was a loving mother and always encouraged her children, biological and foster, to strive for their goals and dreams. She was everyone’s mother when needed and everyone’s sister. She loved her times spent in church, and loved her times spent at the beach with her family. She opened her home to so many, relatives or otherwise, and was always there to offer a helping hand.

The family would like to extend thanks to MD Anderson oncologist Dr. Charles Lu and to his nurse Imelda for the support and care they gave Maribell during her battle. We would also like to thank Edna and Janie and the rest of the Gentiva Hospice team for their help and support during this time.

Mrs. Cardenas is preceded in death by her parents Alvaro and Consuelo Gonzalez. She is survived by her husband Norberto Cardenas; two children, Bryan Austen (Damian) Cardenas, Ryan Isaac Cardenas; four siblings Roy (Frankie) Gonzalez, Sally (George) Trevino, Velma (Juan) Landa, and Martha (Omar) Cantu.
