MARIO S. MARTINEZ SAN JUAN – Mario S. Martinez, 87, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at his residence in San Juan. He was a US Army Veteran and served with the 3333rd Transportation Corps in Fort Benning, Georgia during the World War II Era. Mario is preceded in death by his wife, Maria Guadalupe Martinez; a son, Mario Alberto Martinez; and a brother, Concepcion Martinez. Mr. Martinez is survived by his eight children, Artemio C. (Ernestina) Martinez of Brownsville, TX, Jose Miguel (Sylvia) Martinez of San Antonio, TX, Jose Baltazar (Blanca) Martinez of San Juan, Maria Gloria (Francisco) Lara of Palmdale, CA, Nelda Ester (Tomas) Hernandez of Edinburg, Maria Guadalupe Valdez of McAllen, Maria Veronica (Lee) Logan of East Lansing, MI, and Doroteo Omar (Leticia) Martinez of Mission; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five siblings, Teodora Martinez of Mission, Jose Benito Martinez of McAllen, Gloria Herrman of Alamo, Socorro Martinez of San Juan, and Miguel Martinez of Mission. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary today, March 28, 2014, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 8788 of McAllen. Pallbearers will be Artemio Cruz Martinez, Jose Miguel Martinez, Jose Baltazar Martinez, Doroteo Omar Martinez, Mario Alberto Martinez, Jr., and David Lee Martinez. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
