MARGIE MCCARTHY
PHARR - Margie McCarthy, 72, entered eternal rest Sunday, January 31, 2021, at Edinburg Regional Medical Center where she courageously battled COVID. She grew up in San Juan attending PSJA schools and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Margie graduated from PSJA High School, Class of 1966. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 with cum laude honors, and a Master of Educational Administration in 1977 from Pan American University. She moved to Pharr in 1980 where she spent the last 40 years. Margie was the most dedicated mother and grandmother attending every volleyball, basketball, football, baseball game and track meet there was.
She was a dedicated educator and mentor to many students and coworkers over the years. She served as a journalism, math and history teacher in Austin, San Antonio, and Brownsville before settling at her beloved alma mater of PSJA. She also served as assistant principal at LBJ Jr High and San Juan Middle School. Her most prominent role was heading up the Public Relations Department for 12 years where she served her community by publishing the PSJA newsletter, news releases, creating district brochures and taking publicity photos of all campuses and administration. She was instrumental in creating and initiating so many programs for the district such as the Adopt-A-School program, a joint venture between businesses and PSJA schools. Margie retired from PSJA after serving 33 accomplished years.
Even in retirement, she excelled at everything she did. Margie became an independent consultant for Mary Kay, rising to director status and building a great team. She will always be remembered for her vibrant, tenacious personality and her infectious laugh. You knew Margie was in the building as soon as you heard that laugh. She will live on in the hearts of her husband of nearly 50 years, her children, her grandchildren, family and the many friends who will forever cherish her memory.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Julian Y. and Margarita Chapa; two brothers, Julian Chapa Jr. and Jose Chapa; and a sister, Norma Linda Chapa.
Margie is survived by her husband, Michael McCarthy Sr. of Pharr; three children, Miki McCarthy, Michael (Georgina) McCarthy Jr., both of Edinburg, Margeaux McCarthy of McAllen; 11 grandchildren, Julian, Nicolas, Daniel and Samuel Enriquez, John Joseph Perez, Nathan, Zoe, Madyn, McKenzie, Michael Jon III and Maverick McCarthy; a brother, Gilbert (Nancy) Chapa of Tacoma, Washington; a sister Jessica Chapa; an aunt, Mag (Oscar) Palacios of McAllen; and two uncles, Abel Anaya and Guadalupe Anaya, both of Pharr.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary Tuesday, February 9, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
