Nicole Andree McKelvy was born in Paris, France on March 5, 1932, and passed away on November 9, 2021 at the age of 89.
She served her community as a librarian for decades, including working at the libraries for Pan-American University and the City of Alamo. She ultimately retired as head librarian from the City of Hidalgo public library. As head librarian for the City of Hidalgo, she was very active and passionate about bringing BorderFest to Hidalgo County each year. She was an advocate for literacy and believed in the power of books.
Nicole McKelvy was preceded in death by her husband Sean McKelvy and her daughter Jeannette Hortness.
She is survived by her daughter Estelle Hortness Love, her sons Raymond Hortness, Andre Hortness, Roy Hortness, Donald Hortness, and stepson Bill McKelvy and the McKelvy family. Nicole McKelvy was also blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with services to begin at 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
