Laura Guerra Mesquita passed away peacefully on March 28, 2021.
Laura is survived by her husband of 40 years, George A. Mesquita; children, Brandon (Arezou) and Teri Hebert (Patrick); grandson, Reed Hebert; parents, Alberto Jr. and Bache Guerra; siblings, Sandra Guerra, Carla Woods (Robert), Liza Guerra and Alberto Guerra III; nieces, Celina Ibarra, Victoria Moreno, and their families; and many friends and extended family.
Laura was born in McAllen on October 28, 1958 and was proudly raised in Mission. She graduated from Mission High School and St. Edward's University in Austin, where she met her husband George. After living in Del Rio early in their marriage, they moved to McAllen to start their family.
Laura danced ballet as a child and through college, even continuing into adulthood, taking classes and performing in The Nutcracker. Later in life, she also found a passion for running. She ran her first of many marathons, half marathons and 5Ks at 50 years old. Her greatest passion, which began at a young age, was volunteering and helping others. She felt this brought great reward and fulfillment to her life. Whether it was volunteering through the Junior League of McAllen, being a CASA volunteer, or sitting on the Board of CAMP University, she wanted to make a difference.
Laura is remembered as a constant figure at her children's events. She enjoyed attending recitals, football games for the band's halftime show, and sitting in the stands at volleyball and soccer games. Laura was always there, supporting her children and cheering on the Mustangs and Bulldogs.
Laura will be greatly missed by many. Although Alzheimer's cut her time with us short, she won the ultimate race with the Lord at the finish line. "Feel free" to dance with the angels now, Mommy... "because I said so."
A service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission (620 N. Dunlap Ave). A memorial gathering will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Event Center in Edinburg (208 E. Canton Rd).
