FR. JOHN "JACK" A. O'MALLEY
Fr. John A. O’Malley, better known to his parishioners and friends as Fr. Jack, went home to the Lord on Monday, February 21, 2011. Fr. Jack was born on April 16, 1926, in Dublin, Ireland. He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1955 at St. Peter Seminary in Wexford, Ireland, for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Texas. He served in the Diocese of Corpus Christi until 1965 at which time the Diocese of Brownsville was formed. Since Fr. Jack was serving in the Valley at this time, he remained there and faithfully served the people of God with great love.
During his years of service, Fr. Jack has served in the following parishes: Our Lady of Refuge, Refugio, TX (Assistant Pastor), from Oct. 1955-1960; St. Peter, Laredo, TX (Assistant Pastor), from 1960-1961; St. Francis Xavier, La Feria, TX (Assistant Pastor) from 1961-1964; St. Joseph, Alamo (Pastor) from June 1964-1968; St. Margaret, Pharr, TX (Pastor) from 1968-1973; St. Anne, Pharr, TX (Pastor) from 1973-1978; Good Shepherd, Brownsville, TX (Pastor) from 1978-1989; San Martin de Porres, Weslaco, TX (Pastor) from 1989-1997; Holy Family, Brownsville, TX (Pastor) from 1997-1998. In September of 1998, Fr. Jack retired and moved to the St. John Vianney Retirement Home for Priests.
Fr. Jack is well remembered for his involvement and work with the Pro-Life Movement, Charismatic Renewal, Legion of Mary, C.C.D. programs for children and youth, and the construction of St. Anne Church in Pharr, TX, and the classrooms at Good Shepherd Church in Brownsville and San Martin de Porres in Weslaco, TX. Altogether, Fr. Jack was responsible for building more than 100 classrooms in the Valley. Deo Gracias!
He is survived by his brother, Fr. Frank O’Malley, his sister, Sr. Elizabeth O’Malley, and his niece Mary (Bryan) Hoey.
A rosary will be offered for Fr. Jack on Wednesday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan, TX. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle-National Shrine at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 24. The public is invited to attend. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Pallbearers will be Msgr. Patrick J. Doherty, Revs. Jaime Cabañas, Jerry Frank, Amador Garza, Ruben Delgado and Pat Seitz.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal, P.O. Box 2279, Brownsville, TX 78522-2279.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
