Lucia Saldaña Palacios
Lucia Saldaña Palacios, longtime resident of Edinburg, Texas, passed away peacefully Monday, June 5, 2017, at her residence surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on February 25, 1926 in Kyle, Texas, Lucia was the matriarch of the Palacios family. She met her husband, Nicolas Palacios, Sr., while working in a cotton field, and Nicolas fell in love with her instantly. He moved three rows closer to her, and told her that he was going to marry her. After Nicolas heard Lucia sing at a church festival, they eloped, and moved to Edinburg shortly after. She was an active parishioner at Holy Family Catholic Church for close to 50 years, and was a member of the Guadalupanas ministry.
Mrs. Palacios was known to express her deep love in the food she made for her children and grandchildren. She used her exquisite voice to sing happy birthday to her sons and daughters every year, and sang the most beautiful prayers and rosaries to The Virgin Mary.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Marcial and Ramona Saldaña, and was the only surviving daughter of 14 children. Additionally, she is preceded by her loving husband, Nicolas Palacios, Sr,; her sons Nicolas Palacios, Jr. and Ernesto Palacios, Sr.; her grandchildren Debra Palacios Rodriguez and Nicolas Santos Palacios.
She is survived by her children: Fred (Maria Elena) Palacios, Teresa (Pedro) Leal, +Nicolas (Frances) Palacios, Juan (Rita) Palacios, +Ernesto (San Juanita) Palacios, Janie (Rudy) Zamorano, Olga (Ricardo) Rodriguez, Rene (Iselda) Palacios, Hon. Mary Alice Palacios, Patricia (Alfredo) Garza, Julie (Joel) Carcaño, and Hon. Toribio (Hope) Palacios. She is also survived by 61 grandchildren, 126 great-grandchildren, and 29 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Sacred Catholic Church, 215 N. 16th Ave. in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1302 E. Champion St. in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 1701 E. Richardson in Edinburg.

Ricardo Rodriguez, Jr., Jimmy Moreno, Eric Caceres, Alfredo Garza, Jr., Joel Carcaño, Jr., and Toribio Palacios, Jr. Deepest gratitude to Doctors Melva Palacios and Chris Casso, Amara Hospice, and Mrs. Palacios’ caregiver for seven years, Mrs. Dalia Flores.
