Jose Luis Peña "Coach Peña", 75, passed away due to cancer on Saturday, December 31, 2022.
Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, he managed his illness with strength and grace, and wanted to spend as much time with his loved ones as possible. On his final day, he was surrounded by his loving wife, Socorro and his children, who he adored more than anything else in the world.
Coach Peña was born to Salomon and Trinidad Peña, on January 16, 1947, in General Bravo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. He was married to the love of his life, Socorro Peña on January 8, 1971. He graduated from Pan American University with a Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Math and Physics. In 1972, he began his teaching and coaching career in Brownsville with St. Joseph Academy and retired from Simon Rivera High School in 2009. He was a proud member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Los Sembradores Civic Organization an Advisory member of Lone Star National Bank.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Salomon and Trinidad Peña, in-laws, Simon and Porfiria Sifuentes, three siblings, Oscar Mario Peña, Ramoncita Cantu and Miguel Angel Peña.
Mr. Peña is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Socorro Peña; three children, Enrique (Julie) Peña, Claudia (Tony) Garcia, Juan Carlos (Jessica) Peña; ten grandchildren who were the pride and joy of his life; four siblings, Ernesto Peña, Bertha (Santos) Martinez, Juan Manuel (Diana) Peña, and Sylvia Peña; brother-in-law, Romeo (Elisa) Sifuentes; and sister-in-law Rosie (Roger) Oberg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all the doctors and nurses from Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and MD Anderson Cancer Center for their dedication to his care.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. rosary Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville. Funeral service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2023, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Brownsville. Entombment will follow at Rose Lawn Memorial Gardens in Brownsville, TX.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
