CESAREA "CHALLA" GALVAN RAMIREZ
SAN JUAN - Cesarea "Challa" Galvan Ramirez, 92, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at her residence in San Juan.
Born in Agua Nueva, Texas, Mrs. Ramirez had lived in San Juan for the past seven years. She served as a postmaster at Agua Nueva in Jim Hogg County in 1940 and as a weather observer for the United States Department of Commerce weather bureau for 15 years. She also served in the Air Craft III Fighters Command, U.S. Army Air Force as a volunteer air craft observer during the second world war in 1944; as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for Jim Hogg County, 1953 - 1956; and as a volunteer for the March of Dimes, 1954 - 1957.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Florencio Cruz Ramirez; a daughter, Luisa Rosa Ramirez Garza; her parents, Basilio and Vicenta Galvan; seven brothers, Julio Galvan, Juan Galvan, Alejandro Galvan, Jose Galvan, Adan Galvan, Basilio Galvan and Omar Galvan; and a sister, Melecia Galvan Ramirez.
Mrs. Ramirez is survived by a daughter, Leah Cantu of San Juan; a son, Florencio (Frances) Ramirez, Jr. of McAllen; a sister, Griselda Galvan Mendoza of Falfurrias; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 pm, with a 7 pm rosary, today, June 11, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 11 am, Friday, June 12, 2009 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hebronville, Texas. Interment will follow at New Hebronville Cemetery.
