DORA MAY CAVAZOS RAMON SAN BENITO/EDINBURG — Dora May Cavazos Ramon, 68, died at 2:08 a.m. on Monday, November 12, 2012, at her residence in San Benito, TX. Ms. Ramon was born on May 1, 1944 in Hastings, MI. Dora moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1976. She received a B.A. degree in psychology from the University of Texas-Pan American in 1984 and had been studying for her master's degree in counseling when she died. Ms. Ramon worked as an immigrant rights advocate for Casa de Proyecto Libertad in Harlingen, TX from 1984 to 1986. In the late 1980's she worked as a community organizer in Chicago, IL. She was also employed as a social worker and foster parent educator by the State of Texas. For the past ten years Ms. Ramon was a first grade teacher at Elma Barrera Elementary in Santa Rosa, TX, where she loved and had great affection and admiration for her students and colleagues. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ismael Ramon and Amelia Cavazos Ramon; brother, Ismael (John) Ramon, Jr.; and former husband, Donald W. O'Connor. Dora is survived by her husband of 33 years, Jonathan Torvik Jones; daughters, Dorina O'Connor and Donna O'Connor, both of Edinburg, TX; son, Donovan O'Connor of Battle Creek, MI; siblings, Dolores (Lolita) Carlisle, Rudy Ramon and Rogelio Ramon all of Battle Creek, MI; five grandsons, Isaiah Cantu, Dominique, Demetrius, Desmond, and Dakota O'Connor. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, November 14, 2012, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg, TX. Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Edinburg, TX, with Reverend Denise Grant of First Lutheran Church in Edinburg, TX officiating. Donations in Ms. Ramon's memory may be sent to First Lutheran Church, 302 S. Sugar Road in Edinburg, TX or Casa de Proyecto Libertad, 113 N. First in Harlingen, TX. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
