Virginia Ann Russell Kurzon, 88, passed peacefully in the early morning of June 18, 2018.
Born on January 9th, 1930 to Lyman Brightman Russell, Jr. and Nemencia De La Torre Russell, she spent her childhood in Edinburg and graduated from Edinburg High School at age 16.
Virginia was a determined, hard working woman who strongly believed in bettering oneself through education. She studied at University of Indiana, Texas A&I University, and Pan American University.
In her professional life, Virginia worked for Southwestern Bell in the late 1940s, the Vale Mayes agricultural company in the 1950s, then dedicated the next 25 years to teaching Reading and English Language Arts at ECISD.
Virginia was fiercely devoted to her family. She was a voracious reader, who relished learning about history and science. She enjoyed playing tennis, and loved watching Western movies.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Victoria Lowenstein and Bertha Trujillo, and two brothers Ezekiel Zamarripa and Ralph C. Russell.
Virginia is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline Mitcham Stapleton and Judith Kurzon (Daniel) De La Vina; five grandchildren, Dawn Stapleton (Bill) Riley, Daniel (Cynthia) De La Vina, John De La Vina, Joshua Stapleton, Jenny De La Vina (Alex) Lozano; two great-grandchildren, all of Edinburg; her sister, Mary John (Frank) Lynch of Rockport, TX; her niece, Patsy Del Barrio of Edinburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be missed immensely and always remembered by her family.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. rosary today, June 21, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
