Alicia Garza Salinas, 97, was called by the Lord on August 17, 2021, at 1:58 pm surrounded by family. She was born in Mission, Texas on May 3, 1924 to Adalberto and Josefa G. Garza. Alicia was raised in New Gulf, Texas and in January 1939 she moved to San Juan with her family.
She graduated from PSJA in 1942 and attended McAllen Business College. Her business career started a Security State Bank in Pharr where she worked for five years. In July 1949 she joined the new San Juan State Bank as one of the first employees as a teller and later was promoted to assistant cashier. After 33 years of service she retired to take over the family business known as Garza's Cafe. She kept this job from 1982 to September 2014 when she decided to sell, after having served the community for 72 years. In her earlier years she was very active in different organizations in the community. She will long be remembered as she worked with the public all her life.
She will be joining her daughter Laura C. Garza, her parents Adalberto and Josefa G. Garza, her siblings Estela Villegas, Amparo Ramirez, Imelda Garza, Rebecca de la O, and Adalberto Garza Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her brothers Ruben D. (Delia) Garza and Armando (Olga) Garza; granddaughters Erika (Michael) Salinas and Selina (Jaime) Sloss; her great-grandchildren whom she adored, Serena, Jacklyn and Michael Jr. Salinas, Madeleine Garza and Rocco Sloss, and numerous nieces and nephews who were so dear, to them she was Tia Licha.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Private funeral services will take place at a later date.
