ELISEO SALINAS
PHARR - Eliseo Salinas, 82, died Saturday, August 7, 2010, at Solara Hospital in McAllen.
He was born in New Gulf, Texas and had lived in Pharr most of his life.
Mr. Salinas was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Occupation of Japan during World War II as a military police. After World War II, he became a master plumber. He went on to work with the Pharr Police Department and later with the United States Border Patrol and the United States Immigration Service. He was self-employed, owner of the formerly known Del Sur Restaurant in Pharr.
Dad was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger days. For over forty years he dedicated his life to Christ and was a Fisherman of Men. He was actively involved at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church; he taught RCIA, was an extraordinary eucharistic minister, a member of the Altar Society, he served as a lector and visited men at the prison facilities. He was involved in the charismatic movement and ministered in the valley, Mexico, China and the Phillipines.
He is preceded in death by a son, Leo Salinas; his parents, Eliseo and Luz Salinas; three sisters, Marie Hernandez, Rafaela Cantu and Amelie Wenneker; and two brothers, Sijifredo and Leonzo Salinas.
Mr. Salinas is survived by his wife, Juana "Alicia" Salinas, of Pharr; six sons, Eliseo "Tito" (Norma) Salinas, Richard (Terri) Salinas, both of McAllen, Dr. Ben (Sujey) Salinas, of Weslaco, Fred (Melissa) Salinas, John Salinas, both of Pharr, and Frank Salinas, of Edinburg; four daughters, Sandra S. (Blas) Ortiz, of Harlingen, Margie Salinas, of Pharr, Catherine (Johnny) Bain, of McAllen, and Georgina Salinas Fowler, of Weslaco; 18 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; a sister, Cristela Hinojosa, of Antioch, California; and numerous loving nephews and nieces who considered him a father.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 pm, with a 7 pm rosary today, August 9, 2010, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 2 pm Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 8788 of McAllen. His six sons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roberto Noe Salinas, Butch Wenneker, Jim Fisher, Robert and Jacob Cantu, Fred Salinas Jr. and Johnny Bain.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
